Many of you who knew Sri S. Tyagaraja Rao ( Rao mama) have suggested that we recognise his contributions to the community on the CCMA website. Let us all join together to create a collage in his honor. We invite each one of you to share your personal memories of Rao mama and come together to celebrate his life and his presence in our midst.

S. Tyagaraja Rao Memorial Childrens' Competition 2011

In order to showcase the talent of our youngsters who are learning Carnatic Music, CCMA will conduct a Children's Carnatic Music Competion. The competition will be judged by a team of visiting artists who will be presenting a jugalbandhi concert that evening. The competition is open to all children between ages 5 and 16 years. Age groups will be determined after the registration deadline.

To enter the competition please email CCMA (to_ccma@yahoo.com) ) giving the contestants’ name, age, phone number, address, an email address as well as the song that he/she wishes to present. All registrations must be received by Feb 21st 2011. Rules and additional details are shown below. A registration fee of $10 per child will be due on the day of the competition. The fee will be waived for Patrons and Benefactors of CCMA.

Venue: Dublin Community Recreation Center, 5600 Post Road, Dublin Ohio.

Competition Rules

• Children between the ages of 5 – 11 yrs and 12 - 16 yrs of age are eligible to participate.
• Participants will be given up to five minutes each to present a krithi without accompaniment.
• Children may also present a geetham, varnam, or other song and will be given three minutes each.
• A bell will sound at the end of the time. If a contestant continues to sing past the bell, they may be disqualified.
• The competition will include instrumental categories including percussion.
• All songs must be sung or played without Alapana, Niraval or Kalpana Swarams
• Songs are not restricted to any particular composer or language.
• All presentations must be solo without any instrumental or other support except sruthi.
• To participate you must register by email to CCMA (to_ccma@yahoo.com) giving the contestants’ name, age, phone number and address, as well as the song that he/she wishes to present.
• All registrations must be received by Feb 21st 2011.

• The fee will be waived for 2011 Patrons and Benefactors of CCMA.

• If there are a large number of participants CCMA – at its sole discretion - may arrange an audition round and may adjust the time allowed per contestant.

• Failure to comply with any of these rules of the competition will result in disqualification.
• The judges will be visiting artists.
• Certificates will be awarded for the best presentations in each category.
• Winners will be announced and awards presented at the end of the concert which will be held on the same day in the evening.
• The judges’ decisions will be final

All of us at CCMA owe him a debt of gratitude for his work to promote Carnatic Music in Ohio. Svanubhava Festival In Chennai : August 2nd - 7th, 2010.

The performing arts festival conducted by Matrka (Bombay Jayashri and T.M.Krishna) and YACM ( Youth Association for Classical Music ) Svanubhava is from the 2nd to the 7th of August this year. This is the 3rd edition of Svanubhava ( a performing arts festival for students ) Due to strong demand and interest from public schools and a great demand from them also to host the festival at their institution this year svanubhava will be held in 5 locations in Chennai.Over 1500 students are expected to attend this festival each day.

Prince Aswathi Thirunal Rama Varma, a member of the Royal Family of Travancore, is a direct descendant of Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma and Raja Ravi Varma. Born on the 13th of August 1968, Prince Varma fell in love with music in general and with the music of M.D.Ramanathan (In the Carnatic style) and Kishore Kumar (In the universal style) in particular when he was still a toddler. He grew up listening to the music of the various great maestros who performed regularly at the Navarathri Mandapam in Thiruvavanthapuram and the constantly updated collection of LP records of Hindi Film Music from his father and sister. more

Maharaja Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma was born in 1813 in Swathi (Chothi) star. And as by the tradition in his family, he was named Swathi Thirunal Rama Varma. more
